Barry Hoeven lead by example. Hard working, giving, respectful, humble and visionary are just a few of the words to describe him and his remarkable life. Only second to his family, Barry was most proud of Kure It and the extraordinary work his team has done to raise money for underfunded cancer research. Impacted by kidney cancer in the late 90’s, one of the ways he fought back was to start Kure It in 2007. As of mid 2016 Kure It has raised and directly funded nearly $5.5 Million to leading edge research programs at world-class institutions such as USC, UCLA, City of Hope as well as internationally. Barry has no doubt impacted countless lives across America and beyond.
All of this was done while at the same time building US Storage Centers. With over 100 locations across the country, USSC is one of the largest and most respected self storage owner/operators in the business. Barry was a leader in our industry not only in design and development standards but, in operations too. He always put his managers first and cared deeply about their personal lives and well being. In addition Barry built a culture of teamwork, accountability and results. As a company we focus on the little things because success is the sum of detail. This why you will always find our storage facilities clean and staffed with friendly professional trained managers who get the big picture – customer service above all else.
Barry is greatly missed by not only our family here at Westport Properties / US Storage Centers but throughout the industry. His memorial service was attended by the most highly respected leaders and operators of the industry and from across the country. That’s because he was a real friend to all of them. Just as he was a real friend to all of us here at the company.
As a tribute, the Self Storage Association graciously prepared a tribute video to Barry and played it to a large crowd at the SSA Las Vegas show in September 2016. Everyone in the crowd missed Barry. And we miss him too.
